マウスピースの旅 vol.16

Gottsu(ゴッツ)というメーカーの作るマウスピースは1本1本丁寧なハンドメイド。
このメーカーがエボナイトという新素材でハードラバータイプのマウスピースを世に出した。


当然、気になる。
メタルピースでご満悦な私は、早速注文を入れた。
それが、Gottsu Sepia Toneだ。

KG'sに加入した当初、私の所持するマウスピースコレクションの中で、ここで吹くならコレが一番合っていると思った。
KG'sの奏でるソウルサウンドには、芯があって柔らかい音が似合う。
このSepia Toneは、ジャズのビンテージを意識して作られたマウスピースで、とても鳴りやすく、表現しやすい素晴らしい一品。
音程も取りやすいことからアンサンブルには適していると言える。




現在、トランペット、トロンボーン、サックスで構成しているKG'sのホーン隊。
この形で機能しだしたのは私が加入してからなのだが、元々KG'sにはサックスだけしかいなかった。
その名残なのか、サックスはソロを吹く機会が多い。

3本のアンサンブルでは必要以上に目立たず調和の取れた音が求められ、(曲調にもよるが)ソロの時はシッカリと前に出る音が必要とされる。
私がKG'sで探している音はこうゆう音である。
その条件で考えるとこのGottsu Sepia Toneというマウスピースは、今一つパンチに欠けると感じていた。

昨年(2017年)、企画モノのバンド(1度だけの本番ステージのために組まれたバンド)で、オルガンを主体としたジャイブという音楽を演奏する機会があった。
ホーンは私(アルトサックス)以外にテナーサックスとバリトンサックスだった。
この時もSepia Toneを使ったが、少し物足りなさを感じていた。

例によって例の如く、私はまたマウスピース探しに出た。
